This study needs to be used to promote a more reasonable amount of exercise for vast majority of the population missing out. That message will be a turn off for many people who struggle with moderate levels of exercise. However, that high level does not need to be extreme. This is a wonderful study that could be used (and I will) to reinforce the benefits of achieving and maintaining a high level of CRF as one ages. We can assume they are not elite athletes however at the level that are seen in the U shaped curve for cardiovascular risks in other studies cited in this article. We do not know if they are regular exercisers or not. The elite group here was people who did well on an ETT. In calling this group "elite" throughout this article and comparing these results to ones questioning the cardiac risks of endurance athletes is as my college instructor used to say "comparing apples to oranges". The maximal estimated METS of 13.8 of this group is that of a fit adult within this age group but NOT for elite endurance athletes who generally score double that amount in actual (not predicted) MET capacity.
